A city without a state, what can you expect from the District of Columbia? Washington, D.C. sits between Maryland and Virginia. The layout of Washington D.C. was the brainchild of architect Pierre Charles L’Enfant. He designed it similar to Paris, France. It is the reason the city is full of so many roundabouts. D.C. is a diverse city with many characteristics. It is home to the United States federal government, home to many people from around the world, and a tourist destination.Throughout the years, I have visited D.C. on many occasions. It is always a delight to pay a visit to the capital of the United States. Being a native New Yorker and having many other major cities within a few hours distance, I am always looking for the next town to visit every time my wife (fiancé at the time) visits. This most recent visit was a last-minute day trip. We crammed in as much as we could in a short few hours. Here are three of the easiest things to do to maximize a limited day in Washington, D.C.
1. Old Town Trolly Tours D.C.: This is one of the best ways to spend your day in D.C. with limited time. It is a perfect way to see the town and monuments. With 17 stops on the downtown route and drivers who double as tour guides, it is a very informative and enjoyable experience. You can refer to their website for options and prices or purchase a ticket from one of their agents at Union Station, depending on what works best for you. The following are only two of the 17 stops on the Old Town Trolley Tours.
2. Florida Avenue Grill: The Oldest Soul Food restaurant in the world, this eatery is every bit worth the visit if you are into savory soul food. They have a classic soul food menu. It is located right on the corner of Florida Avenue and 11th street NW. The ambiance is a diner-style eatery with seats at the counter or the booth tables. My favorite item on the menu is their Southern Pan-Fried Chicken. I vary the side dishes every time I go.
3. Visit a Museum: Whether on a layover or waiting for a friend to be off shift visiting the Museums is the perfect way to kill time. There are many museums worth visiting in the D.C. area. My two favorites are the National Museum of the American Indian and the National Air and Space Museum. Many of the museums are along the path of the National Mall. A short walk or a quick stop on the Subway.
Washington, D.C, is a great town with many more reasons to visit than this list. However, there are attractions and things to do at all 17 stops of the Old Town Trolley Tours. This one activity becomes many more if you hop off to explore a bit. They also have a connecting bus for Arlington Cemetary. Florida Avenue Grill is the oldest Soul food Restaurant worldwide and a great spot to grub; however, without subtracting from the greatness of this restaurant, there are other eateries in town. As many museums as there are in D.C. I know there is no way you will visit them all in a day. So plan your day accordingly in this spectacular city. Until next time D.C., hopefully, sooner than later!
